Surges occurring in electrical equipment are man-made or natural impulses of either voltage or current. Not all surges reach the severity of lightning induced spikes, but most surges can cause damage.
As technology works to reduce the size of electronic equipment and components, the operating voltage levels of the equipment also gets smaller and it’s sensitivity to surges greatly increases.
The first indications of damage from surges are typically seen in reduced life-span of electronic equipment. More serious surges actually disrupt operation and can cause unexplained shutdowns. The most severe surges are immediately destructive and most easily identified. All three levels of surges are costly and avoidable by the proper application of a variety of suppression technologies.
